Boron steels

The alloys of boron steels allow them a superior resistance after hardening by heat treatment.

Boron is generally added to medium carbon alloy steels to improve their performance and that these reach a similar performance compared to those of high carbon content, and other alloy steels, which involve a higher cost. It is preferred to use this route instead of increasing the carbon and manganese content or adding chromium and molybdenum since this could reduce ductility during the manufacturing process.

The amount of boron needed to obtain a good quality are very small, in the range of 0.0005 and 0.005% B.

The general applications of this type of steels include tool steels, blades, supports and more recently in the automobile sector, where they have evolved offering great resistance to the body, the chassis, the falca, the amount of the doors, the beams of Security and bumper.
